Polls reveal Germany in febrile political mood before state elections

Late-August opinion polls ahead of key state elections showed many Germans expecting Chancellor Merz to be out before the 2029 elections. Another found that almost half are unafraid of the far-right AfD. And yet another put a hard-left party in the lead in Berlin.
