UK issues formal apology for forcing unwed mothers to give up babies

The practice went on until 1976, even as British society was going ostensibly through a sexual revolution. Unmarried mothers were pushed into giving up their newborns for adoption. Around 185,000 babies were affected between 1949 and 1976.
