Ukraine enters first stage of EU membership negotiations

The first step of a long road to EU membership for Ukraine has formally started. It marks the end of a two-year delay caused by a Hungarian veto. Accession countries must fully align themselves with EU law and standards. This means that negotiations usually last years.
