Vatican excommunicates ultra-conservatives consecrated as bishops

Pope Leo first issued a strident warning and then acted with resolve when ultra-conservative clergy consecrated bishops without authorization. Leo fears a major schism, as the group continues to grow. It rejects 1960s reforms including saying mass in the vernacular.
