Two ministers reported to have left Bolivia's government
After weeks of protests and blockades, two senior Bolivian ministers have reportedly resigned from office. The reasons for their action is of yet unknown.
Berlin (dpa) – Two senior ministers have reportedly resigned from the Bolivian government amid fierce protests and road blockades in the country.
Defence Minister Marcelo Salinas and Education Minister Beatriz García stepped down from their posts on Tuesday, according local media articles that cited government sources.
There was initially no official confirmation of the resignations, and the reasons for them were also not immediately known.
Groups that have been demonstrating in the country for weeks had called for the resignation of several ministers, the newspaper La Razón reported.
Political crisis
The South American Andean state has been in the grip of a political crisis for weeks.
Since early May, trade unions, farmers, miners and supporters of former left-wing president Evo Morales have been blocking major transport routes. This has led to shortages of food, fuel and medicines.
The protests are directed against the difficult economic situation, rising living costs and reform plans by the conservative government of President Rodrigo Paz. His election victory at the end of 2025 brought to an end an era of left-wing governments that had lasted almost two decades.
However, observers see the causes of the current crisis in broader social and economic discontent. Although Morales is regarded as a key supporter of the protest movement, analysts view him more as a political beneficiary than as the actual instigator of the crisis.
